U.S. Women’s National Team
Notes from Carson, Calif.

SECOND WEEK OF WNT TRAINING STARTS ON FEB. 9 WITH 26 PLAYERS: After a week of intense training with 35 players at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Pia Sundhage has released 11 players, re-assigned one to the U-23 Women’s National Team, and called up three additional players, making for a group of 26 players that will train from Feb. 9-17 at The HDC. Following the completion of training camp, Sundhage will choose a 20-player roster for the 2008 Algarve Cup, which will be held March 5-12 in southern Portugal. The four matches at Algarve Cup are the next international games for the USA and the final official matches before the USA enters the CONCACAF Final Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament being held April 2-13 in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

Cox, Buehler and White Join Camp
Defender Stephanie Cox, a starter in the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup, joins training camp on Saturday after being given last week off to rest and recuperate. Lopez was the only player on the Women’s World Cup Team who went straight into a collegiate season after the WWC last fall. In addition, defender Rachel Buehler, who was scheduled to travel to Spain with the U-23s but instead will train with the senior team, joins camp along with midfielder Kacey White, who has been playing in Sweden with the AIK club in Stockholm.

Five Duke players -- Patrick Bailey, Ronnie Drummer, Thaddeus Lewis, Wesley Oglesby and Matt Rumsey -- have been named to the 40-member 2007 Academic All-ACC Football Team announced on Monday afternoon by league commissioner John Swofford.

To be eligible for consideration, a player must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.

All 12 teams were represented by at least one member on the team. Maryland led all schools with six selections, followed by Duke and Clemson with five apiece. Boston College, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest had four picks each, followed by N.C. State (3), Virginia Tech (3), Florida State (2), Virginia (2), Miami (1) and North Carolina (1).

Oglesby, a redshirt freshman defensive end from Arlington, Texas, enjoyed his first year as a starter by compiling 37 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, one quarterback sack and a team-leading seven quarterback pressures. He also was named to the Freshman All-ACC team by The Sporting News.
