Quarter 1 Report Cards
An Opportunity for Growth
Quarter 2 began this week, which means that a link to your student’s Quarter 1 Report Card was sent this week. Please take the opportunity to review Quarter 1 grades with your student. While some students will celebrate their accomplishments, others may feel disappointed with their results. Both experiences can provide valuable opportunities for growth! We just need to take the time to lean in.
One of the most important lessons we can teach our students is that a grade reflects learning at a particular moment in time—it does not define their identity, ability, potential, or worth. Rather than focusing only on the grade, encourage your student to reflect on what the results reveal. Was preparation effective? Were there concepts they didn’t fully understand? What might they do differently next time? One place to start the conversation is with progress grades. Progress assignments are designed to reinforce and move learning forward. Is your student engaging fully with their satellite assignments?
A growth mindset is more than simply encouraging students to “try harder.” It means helping them identify better strategies, seek help early, apply teacher feedback, and take ownership of their learning. As you review report cards together, consider asking, “What did you learn from this experience, and what will you do differently in Quarter 2?” Then, work with them to make a plan. Sometimes we can take for granted that our student knows how to prepare, when really they need some assistance chunking out what real prep looks like. Does your student need help planning? Reach out to any of their teachers, Andrena Briggs, or Denise Webb. We can help!
At Grace Prep, we want our students to understand that setbacks are not the end of the story. With reflection, perseverance, and a willingness to grow, they can become opportunities for meaningful progress.
