Support without Taking Over!
We are wrapping up the 6th week of school, and the end of the first quarter is approaching. It’s not unusual for students to start feeling the pressure of missing assignments, uneven grades, or routines that haven’t worked as well as they hoped. This is an important opportunity for parents to support their student without taking over the responsibility that belongs to them.
A helpful place to begin is with questions rather than commands. Ask your student to identify what is really getting in the way: Is it a lack of understanding? Poor time management? Disorganization? Avoidance? Once the problem is clear, help your student determine the next responsible step.
When communication with a teacher is needed, encourage your student to initiate that conversation. Parents can help students think through what to say, but allowing them to ask questions, seek clarification, and advocate for themselves builds confidence and ownership.
The goal is not a last-minute rescue, but growth in the habits students will need long after this quarter ends. A simple question can help keep responsibility in the right place:
“What is the next step that belongs to you?”
